Endings and Beginnings
We had a nice New Years Eve here. The kidlet had been trying to make plans all week, but none of those plans seemed acceptable to me. She finally gave in and invited a friend to spend the night, which is our normal routine for that night. She also treated us to a dinner out of
Mongolian BBQ before we settled in for the night.
I really wasn't prepared for BOYS to want to come and hang out. Ended up with 3 boys hanging out from about 10:00 on. I took them home after they all rang in the new year. They were on their skateboards. I have no idea where the parents were, if it is normal for them to be out cruising around at all hours or if they had perhaps escaped for the night and were on the lam! I heard them talking about skateboarding home, which surprised me. I told them to get in the car and that I would be taking them home. I had assumed they were going to call for a ride.
In any case, it was nice to hear them all having a good time. I hung out with Ryan Seacrest in my bedroom with the door open to keep an ear out for trouble. They had a small spread of snacks set out and spent the evening snacking, playing wii and video chatting with friends. As small as this house is, I still love having a house full of kids. From the looks between my girl and one of the boys, I am sure boys are going to be a regular fixture around here.
In any case, this was a much better way to spend New Years than I did for many years. Even as a child from the age of about 8 and up, my parents would buy each of us kids a bottle of champagne on NYE. I used to anticipate it for weeks before! As an adult, until I got sober, I would also have a lot of anticipation leading up to that evening. A lot of work would go into making the best plans, making sure I had enough money to get drunk on and do whatever else I wanted to do, and finding the perfect place where I could spend the night. I knew I would not be in any position to drive. When I was married, we acquired a camper on our Toyota truck. We used to utilize that while out partying and just climb up in there and pass out. Oh what a life!
I am very grateful to welcome another new year clean and sober!
